The Nick is neither, owned nor operated by the Town of Wolfeboro. The Nick is a private 501(c)(3) not for profit organization that is owned by the Wolfeboro Area Recreation Association (WARA) and operated by WARA’s staff and Board of Directors.
The Wolfeboro Area Recreation Association (WARA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the central mission to provide recreational opportunities for both children and adults that enhance the quality of life and incorporate and support community values. WARA does so by planning, constructing and overseeing recreational facilities as exemplified by The Nicholas J. Pernokas Recreation Park, which it will manage in perpetuity in service to all throughout the Lakes Region.
The Nick receives no tax dollars; rather it depends on user fees from leagues and other organizations that use the facility, grants from foundations, and continued donations from generous individuals and businesses throughout the community. Visit our Ways to Give page here to learn more.
The Nick is free to the general public. Donations are always welcome and appreciated. WARA does however require all organized sports leagues, individuals, and or businesses that use The Nick on a scheduled basis or for a scheduled event or activity to make a contribution for the space they use. These contributions go directly towards the maintenance of the facility.
The Nick is open to the general public year-round dawn to dusk, though most league activities operate at the facility April to December The only time The Nick would be considered closed to the public would be during a private event or function.
